Welcome to These Are Systems
Hi, and welcome to These Are Systems, the newsletter of Jacob Bayless, P. Eng.
I chose the name These Are Systems because the theme of this newsletter will be to talk about applied control systems and systems thinking. In part this is because the fields of systems and controls engineering are core to my interests, but also because just about everything can be considered some kind of a system, including systems that comprise other systems and so on, so it's really an open invitation to talk about any subject from an analytical mindset.
I'd like to use this platform to share some thoughts and, hopefully, insights that I occasionally stumble across. I hope that you find them interesting. I generally only take the time to write about ideas that I'm emphatically interested in or that I think are very important to spread. If, in reading this blog, I inspire any thoughts of your own, don't hesitate to get in touch. Whether you agree or disagree, I'd be happy to hear your thoughts about any of these subjects as well. I only ask that you engage in a polite, charitable, and respectful way.
While this is a professional platform, I intend to write casually here. While I'll speak on matters connected with engineering, science, and so on, none of what I write here is intended to be professional engineering advice or opinions. Most topics that I write about will be subjects that I have some expertise in, but I also won't hesitate to inquire and speculate beyond my direct expertise. I will frequently offer my personal opinions and perspectives, and while I'll make an effort to cite sources as helpful, my main goal with this blog is to engage with important ideas on a personal and casual level in a way that is engaging, clear, and educational, which may sometimes come at the expense of being academically rigorous or precise.
